English and maths classes
From the public sector to the private, the entire nation has felt the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown. What’s extensively clear, however, is the significance it’s had on the education sector as a whole.
What does the evidence say?
`There is growing evidence around the impact of school closures on the learning outcomes of pupils. Research shows a consistent pattern:
* Pupils have made less academic progress compared with previous year groups,
* There is a large attainment gap for disadvantaged pupils, which seems to have grown.
Studies from NFER, Department for Education and GL assessment show a consistent impact of the first national lockdown with pupils making around 2 months less progress than similar pupils in previous years. The studies from NFER and RS assessment both show large gaps for disadvantaged pupils, which seem to have grown since the start of the pandemic. While many studies show similar learning effects between English and mathematics learning, some recent studies – including the analysis commissioned by the DfE does indicate some increased learning loss for mathematics. Most studies have taken place in primary schools. Where studies have examined older pupils (DfE and GL Assessment), the results are inconsistent with one study showing similar impacts and the other showing a smaller impact for pupils in secondary schools.`

To be able to do this, we would like to introduce you to Paul – the English and maths teacher.
Paul is going to have English and maths lessons at our centre from September 2021.

`Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Paul, and I am a full-time teacher resident in Rickmansworth. It has recently been brought to my attention that there may be a need here for booster English and Maths lessons for children. To that end, I wish to make myself available for teaching classes here at Mill End Community Centre on Saturdays mornings and early afternoons. I propose to coordinate classes for as many levels as are required by you (i.e. across all Key Stages, the 11 plus, GCSE); i.e. I plan to set the classes according to the responses received from this notice. The lessons are aimed at being engaging and holistic, promoting confidence, fluency and self-sufficient learning. Students will begin just within their own area of comfort, then progress steadily and solidly towards complex subjects on a step-by-step basis, gradually nurturing a taste for challenge. Students’ progress will be assessed weekly through short tests, and parents should expect feedback from this on a bi-weekly basis, as well as a weekly homework sheet that can be marked by parents according to a weekly answer sheet sent by email. Each class will have a maximum of eight students, ensuring that each child receives sufficient personal attention and assistance tailored to individual pace.
